Lake Baikal: The Deepest Lake on Earth

In Siberia, Lake Baikal holds more fresh water than all North American Great Lakes combined — and species found nowhere else.

Lake Baikal in southern Siberia is the deepest lake on the planet, reaching 1,642 metres at its maximum depth. Formed in an ancient rift valley more than 25 million years ago, it contains roughly twenty percent of the world's unfrozen surface freshwater — a volume so large that it could supply humanity for generations if replenishment stopped, which it does not.

The lake stretches 636 kilometres from north to south, bordered by mountains and taiga forest. Its age and isolation produced an ecosystem often compared to the Galápagos Islands: thousands of species, most found nowhere else on Earth.

A living laboratory

Water clarity in winter allows ice to appear turquoise; in summer, the surface stretches wider than many seas. The lake hosts around 2,000 species of plants and animals, two-thirds of them endemic — including the nerpa, the only exclusively freshwater seal, and the golomyanka, a translucent fish rich in oils that survive extreme pressure.

Omul salmon, harvested and smoked along shores, support local economies and culinary tradition. Sponges and crustaceans filter water so effectively that visibility can exceed forty metres in calm conditions — a rarity for such a large body of water.

Geology and formation

Baikal sits where the Eurasian and Amurian plates pull apart, deepening the basin millimetre by millimetre each year. Hot springs along shores hint at geothermal activity. Sediment cores extracted by international drilling projects record climate shifts across millions of years, offering data prized by paleoclimatologists.

Unlike younger glacial lakes, Baikal's depth and volume buffer it against short-term temperature swings, yet long-term warming still alters ice cover duration and plankton cycles.

Culture and stewardship

Local Buryat communities regard Baikal as sacred, calling it a sea and weaving it into spiritual practice. Russian writers and scientists have campaigned for protection since the nineteenth century, opposing pulp mills and pipeline projects that threatened water quality.

Today a mix of national parks and UNESCO World Heritage status safeguards large portions of shoreline, though illegal logging and unregulated tourism still stress fragile bays.

Climate barometer

Scientists regard Baikal as a barometer for climate change: its ecosystem reacts quickly to warming temperatures and changing precipitation. Ice season shortening affects algae blooms and fish spawning. Researchers monitor isotopes and dissolved gases to detect shifts invisible to casual visitors.

International collaborations bring limnologists from Japan, the United States, and Europe to share methods for studying oligotrophic — nutrient-poor — waters that remain clear despite immense depth.

Visiting responsibly

Tourism peaks around frozen winter months when vehicles drive across ice and photographers chase methane bubble formations trapped in clear slabs. Summer hiking on the Great Baikal Trail reveals forests and cliffs inaccessible by road.
